Zero to 3800 Unique Visitors Per Day in 17 Days Organically!: "The website pulls RSS feeds from other hip hop music websites. During this time, there was a scandal that received a lot of notoriety and searches. You can see the Google Analytics screenshots to see the exact keywords they were searching to get to the website. Apparently, Google indexed Bred4Bread Music before the original source that had this information, so Google gave my website first priority in SERP rank placement. "

The asterisk is a place holder and enables you to secure different sub-domains that share the same base/second level domain name such as "mydomain.com" in our example. If you need to secure sub-domains on multiple servers, you will need to purchase separate wildcards for each server. Here is an example of sub-domains with the same second level domain:

o www.mydomain.com
o w1.mydomain.com
o secure.mydomain.com
o test.mydomain.com
o trash.mydomain.com

All of these have the same second level domain "mydomain.com" but different hostnames. One wildcard certificate of the form " *.mydomain.com " could serve all these web sites."

French tech conference LeWeb loses challenge for LeWeb.com domain name - Domain Name Wire: "many of its attendees reported confusion when they visited LeWeb.com by mistake. This is no surprise — typing .com instead of any other top level domain name is a common mistake.
The World Intellectual Property Organization panel denied the conference’s complaint, observing that LeWeb.com was registered well before the conference was founded. This would explain why it registered the .net version instead.
Another interesting note: LeWeb’s complaint says it has French trademarks for leweb2 leweb2.com leweb2.fr and leweb3 leweb3.com."

How to Catch an Expiring Domain Name—Case Study & Tutorial—Review of Domain Catchers

How to Catch an Expiring Domain Name—Case Study & Tutorial—Review of Domain Catchers: "Domain Catching Services

I read up on services that attempt to "catch" domain names for you at the very instant the Registrar drops them. Nowadays, for valuable domain names, individuals stand no chance of registering an expiring domain by themselves, because "name-catching" services try to time the "drop" to the fraction of a second. Using multiple servers, they bombard the registry with registration requests. If you want to be sure to get an expiring domain, you probably need to use one of these services.

But there is a catch. If you "book" a domain with two of the top three players (Enom and Pool.com), they do not simply buy it for you. Once they have secured the name, they put it on auction. In the case of Pool.com, it's a multi-stage auction system that ensures you will buy the name for the absolute highest price you are willing to pay. "

Probably best illustrated by way of example:

How To Get Started As A Domainer: "domainer is someone who earns a profit buying and selling domain names. The philosophy is similar to the stock market: buy low and sell high. Here are 28 tips, tools, techniques and financing options to get you started on your way to successful domaining.
Domain Buying Strategies
Domaining is a lot like stock investing, the very best in the field have moved beyond basic strategies and have developed their own specific formulas for success. But just as with stocks, to obtain the skills necessary to reach that advanced stage, beginners must first understand the fundamentals of strategic domain buying."

How To Get Started As A Domainer: "$10,000 per day sound to you? Webmaster and marketing extraordinaire Marcus Frind reportedly pulls in $10,000 per day in Google AdSense from his dating website PlentyofFish.com. But that’s chump change compared to the $100,000 per day that domainer Yun Ye was pulling in before he sold his domain portfolio for about $164M in 2004 and subsequently disappeared under the radar.
When it comes to making a buck on the internet it seems that everyone has a solution, although few of them seem to work."

Domain name speculation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "sometimes known as domainers, also register domain names based on seemingly generic phrases such as propertyforsale in the hope that these domain names could be sold later to businesses. Typically, domain name speculators will try to stay away from domain names containing trademarks as this could be considered cybersquatting.
Some country code TLDs or sponsored TLDs will have what is referred to as an eligibility or nexus requirement[14][15][16][17] to limit registration to specific geographical"

Domain name speculation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "Domain speculation occurs in other TLDs as well, such as NET and to a lesser extent in ORG, INFO, and BIZ. Of the gTLDs, INFO is the most popular by registration volume compared to BIZ gTLD due to the low cost of initial registration and the recognisability of 'info' as being an abbreviation of 'information'.[3][4]
Domain name speculation also occurs in country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) such as .uk, .de and .us.[5][6] "

Kevin Ham, the $300 million master of Web domains - June 1, 2007

Kevin Ham, the $300 million master of Web domains - June 1, 2007: "clubby world of domainers, he's a mystery man. Until now Ham has never talked publicly about his business. You won't find his name on any domain registration, nor will you see it on the patent application for the Cameroon trick.

There are practical reasons for the low profile: For one, Ham's success has drawn enemies, many of them rivals. He once used a Vancouver post office box for domain-related mail "

"It's in the works," Ham says over lunch in his hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia. "That's why I can't talk about it." He's nearly as reluctant to share details about his newest company, called Reinvent Technology, into which he's investing tens of millions of dollars to build a powerhouse of Internet businesses around his most valuable properties."

Kevin Ham, the $300 million master of Web domains - June 1, 2007: "he's also the man behind the domain world's latest scheme: profiting from traffic generated by the millions of people who mistakenly type ".cm" instead of ".com" at the end of a domain name.

Try it with almost any name you can think of -- Beer.cm, Newyorktimes.cm, even Anyname.cm -- and you'll land on a page called Agoga.com, a site filled with ads served up by Yahoo (Charts, Fortune 500).

Ham makes money every time someone clicks on an ad -- as does his partner in this venture, the West African country of Cameroon. Why Cameroon? It has the unforeseen good fortune of owning .cm as its country code -- just as Germany runs all names that end with .de."

Since 2000 he has quietly cobbled together a portfolio of some 300,000 domains that, combined with several other ventures, generate an estimated $70 million a year in revenue. (Like all his financial details, Ham would neither confirm nor deny this figure.)

Working mostly as a solo operator, Ham has looked for every opening and exploited every angle -- even inventing a few of his own -- to expand his enterprise. Early on, he wrote software to snag expiring names on the cheap."

People who had the guts and foresight to sweep up names shed during the dotcom bust are now landlords of some of the most valuable real estate on the Web.

How to make money without really trying
The man at the top of this little-known hierarchy is Kevin Ham -- one of a handful of major-league "domainers" in the world and arguably the shrewdest and most ambitious of the lot. Even in a field filled with unusual career paths, Ham's stands out."

Ham is a devout Christian, and he spends $31,000 to add Christianrock.com to his collection, which already includes God.com and Satan.com. When it's all over, Ham strolls to the table near the exit and writes a check for $650,000. It's a cheap afternoon."

In some respects the role is therapeutic rather than policing, which is consistent with my approach to be inclusive and welcoming. A partnership still requires nurturing and care. The ICANN staff provide the nurturing and care to the multi-stakeholder model and the ombudsman is there when the family has an argument."

ICANN Opens Domain Naming: Is The 'Dot Com' Boom Over?

ICANN Opens Domain Naming: Is The 'Dot Com' Boom Over?: "how effective -- or necessary -- they would be in the long run.

"In the early days of the internet, there was that first gold rush for domain names, because domain was quite important to finding things. Search capability was essential," Falzone explained. But these days, he posited, users are just as likely to use search engines like Google to find an individual or company, making domain names less important.

Others in the industry said the traditional domain name endings show little sign of going away. Kurt Gastrock, senior vice president of product at Network Solutions, a domain name registry and web hosting service, said that "the landscape has been dominated by .com extension since the existence of the commercial internet. And it still makes up half of the registrations.""

ICANN Opens Domain Naming: Is The 'Dot Com' Boom Over?: "The thorniest question surrounds category names and who controls the rights to them. Ernst says that "preference will be given to those groups that want to run an open community" and foresees industry associations and larger groups making collective bids, but with "strict guidelines as to who can participate."

Jeremiah Johnston, the chief operating officer for domain name marketplace Sedo, cautioned that "these are words," -- not trademarked names -- and warned that concerns will inevitably arise as to "who is the true custodian of them.""

Companies, places and individuals will be given the opportunity to register their names, and category domains -- such as .cars, .sports and .news -- will be up for registration come January 2012.

Given the mere 22 possible endings available now, the decision has potentially far-ranging implications as to how corporations, non-profits and individuals choose to exist online."

ICANN approves plan to vastly expand top-level domains

ICANN approves plan to vastly expand top-level domains: "TLD won't be an exercise in casual vanity. Simply getting your application processed will cost $185,000 and, should it be approved, you'll end up being responsible for managing it. Do not take this lightly, ICANN warns, since "this involves a number of significant responsibilities, as the operator of a new gTLD is running a piece of visible Internet infrastructure." Presumably, service providers will take care of this hassle, but that will simply add to the cost of succeeding.

ICANN suggests the changes will "unleash the global human imagination." At best, the unleashing will be pretty limited, with a maximum of 1,000 new domains a year. Some of these will undoubtedly show signs of imagination through a clever use of character combinations in some URLs"

ICANN approves plan to vastly expand top-level domains

ICANN approves plan to vastly expand top-level domains: "ICANN apparently recognized that there's a continued interest in expanding gTLDs, and set about creating a mechanism to handle requests as they come in, rather than to consider them in batches on an ad-hoc basis. And at least according the FAQ site that it has set up, the organization expects a busy response: "Soon entrepreneurs, businesses, governments and communities around the world will be able to apply to operate a Top-Level Domain of their own choosing." (More details, including an Applicant Guidebook, are also available.)

Still, the FAQ also makes it clear that grabbing a gTLD won't be an exercise in casual vanity. Simply getting your application processed will cost $185,000 and, should it be approved, you'll end up being responsible for managing it. Do not take this lightly, ICANN warns, since "this involves a number of significant responsibilities, as the operator of a new gTLD is running a piece of visible Internet infrastructure." "

ICANN, Internet domain names: ICANN opens up Internet domain-name system - Los Angeles Times

ICANN, Internet domain names: ICANN opens up Internet domain-name system - Los Angeles Times: "proliferation of new addresses, consumers could be confused about who owns the site they're visiting. If the music industry opened a .records domain name, both Apple Inc., which sells music on iTunes, and Apple Corps Ltd., the Beatles' music publisher, might vie for the rights to apple.records. How will the music industry decide who gets the address?

Trademark attorneys argue that with each new suffix, companies would be forced to defend their brands against legions of impostors. If names like .search, .phone and .maps were successfully created, Google Inc. might be forced to protect its brand name by paying to register google.search, google.maps and google.phone."

ICANN, Internet domain names: ICANN opens up Internet domain-name system - Los Angeles Times

ICANN, Internet domain names: ICANN opens up Internet domain-name system - Los Angeles Times: ""Today's decision will usher in a new Internet age," said Peter Dengate Thrush, chairman of ICANN's board of directors, in a statement following the group's approval of the expansion Monday in Singapore. "We have provided a platform for the next generation of creativity and inspiration."

But with a price tag of $185,000, creating a new domain won't be cheap or easy. ICANN — short for the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers — will make the final decisions on new domains. The group requires that applicants be "established public or private organizations," with the necessary technical capability to keep a domain running.

ICANN's announcement drew criticism from those who disputed the value of expanding the already complicated Internet naming system, including those that said the move would mostly benefit the nonprofit ICANN and the for-profit companies, like GoDaddy.com and VeriSign Inc., that sell Web addresses. Some also questioned whether the new domain system would make navigating the Web any easier"
